Android Pie-based EMUI 9 rolling out for Mate 10 after Huawei Mate 20 launch

Android Pie-based EMUI 9 rolling out for Mate 10 after Huawei Mate 20 launch

It seems the time is ripe for the Android Pie official update story to gain some momentum. More than two months have passed since Google released Android 9 Pie for the Google Pixel/XL and the Google Pixel 2/XL. Official Android Pie updates by device makers have been few and far between, mostly dealing with Essential and OnePlus. Since then, we have seen Sony release the Android Pie update for the Sony Xperia XZ2/XZ2 Compact and Xiaomi roll out Android 9 Pie-based MIUI 10 update for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S. Samsung has yet to officially start the beta program for the Galaxy S9‘s Android Pie update. Crucially, however, Samsung’s chief rival—Huawei—has already been operating a limited Android Pie-based EMUI 9 beta program since last month for many Huawei/Honor smartphones including the Huawei Mate 10 series. Huawei also recently unveiled “Made for India” features in EMUI 9.

EMUI 9 is the successor of EMUI 8, which was based on Android Oreo. Now, Huawei has started rolling out the Android Pie-based EMUI 9 update for the European dual SIM variant of the standard Huawei Mate 10 (ALP-L29). The update has a download size of 3.94GB, which is typical of major Huawei OTA firmware updates but which remains unusually large in the broader Android world.

Huawei Mate 10 Android PieAlthough there is no screenshot of the changelog, we already know that EMUI 9 brings a streamlined UI and support for most Android Pie features. It also brings a new gesture navigation system. In terms of look and feel, EMUI 9 is an interesting hybrid of EMUI 8 and stock Android Pie. The UI has been significantly updated in terms of the aesthetics of the quick settings menu, but other aspects such as the status bar remain unchanged.

It’s good to see Huawei rolling out Android Pie for the Mate 10 in a relatively timely manner. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro probably won’t have to wait much longer to receive the update, which should also soon roll out for the Huawei P20 and the Huawei P20 Pro. Meanwhile, the new Huawei Mate 20, the Mate 20 Pro, the Mate X all ship with Android Pie-based EMUI 9 out of the box.
