Lenovo K9 and Lenovo A5 launched in India to take on the Xiaomi Redmi 6/6A

Xiaomi is the recommended choice in the budget smartphone price segment. The company’s Redmi phones provide the most value for money, and for a while, they were the only choices in this price segment due to lack of competition. The Xiaomi Redmi 6A and the Xiaomi Redmi 6 are Xiaomi’s current phones in this price segment. Competition is steadily increasing as Realme has launched the affordable Realme C1 in India. Now, Lenovo has gone straight after the Redmi 6 series by launching the Lenovo K9 and the Lenovo A5 in India.

In terms of specifications, the Lenovo K9 competes with the Xiaomi Redmi 6, while the Lenovo A5 competes with the Redmi 6A. The Lenovo K9 is a global-first launch in India, while the Lenovo A5 was launched in China in June. The K9 is the successor of the Lenovo K8, which was launched more than a year ago. The Lenovo K and A series are not Motorola phones. Instead of running stock Android, these phones are powered by Lenovo’s ZUI. Their specifications are noted below:

The Lenovo K9 competes with the Redmi 6 but ends up being more expensive than its competitor. On the other hand, the Lenovo A5 differentiates itself from the Redmi 6A by featuring a fingerprint sensor. However, its SoC—the MediaTek MT6739—is an older, less capable SoC than the 12nm MediaTek Helio A22 of the Redmi 6A.

In terms of design, the phones adopt 18:9 displays. The Lenovo K9 has a glass back in order to differentiate itself from the Redmi 6’s plastic construction.
