OxygenOS OB 6 on the OnePlus 6 adds Nightscape and new gesture

The OnePlus 6 has been a hit since its launch last summer, with the company appearing to work the hardest it ever has on its software. Between a promised update for the OnePlus 3/3T to Android Pie and the number of software upgrades getting released for the OnePlus 6, the company is quickly becoming a fan favorite. We only saw the fifth Open Beta release a little under two weeks ago for the OnePlus 6, and now we’re getting to see Open Beta 6 of OxygenOS based on Android Pie. It brings the brand new Nightscape feature found on the OnePlus 6T for low light photography (though it likely isn’t a Pixel 3 contender) and the brand new quick switch gesture to the OnePlus 6.

 

If you were on the previous Open Beta, you were actually already able to access the new quick switch gesture on your phone simply by updating to the latest version of the OnePlus Launcher. Now that updated launcher comes as part of OxygenOS, so you don’t need to worry about downloading an external APK and installing it yourself. When that update will come to the stable channel is unknown, however, as back when the company introduced the new Google Assistant gesture it wasn’t added in the new stable version released after it. Updating will also get you the brand new Nightscape mode, which you can check out a couple of samples in part 1 of our review of the OnePlus 6T.

The update also introduces the November 2018 security patches, which interestingly haven’t even been released to the public yet. Device OEMs typically get the patches a month in advance, where Google then discloses the latest vulnerabilities of which are patched in their monthly security bulletin. As such, we don’t actually know what has been patched yet. The gallery application has also been updated, with a number of new features to make it nicer to use. The About phone screen has also changed (shown above).

The update is rolling out now, but if you don’t want to wait then you can download the latest version of OxygenOS Open Beta via the Oxygen Updater application. It’ll allow you to download and flash the latest version of OxygenOS, and it doesn’t even require root. The full update ZIP comes in at 1.5GB, which you’ll have to download if you’ve made any modifications to your OnePlus 6 whatsoever. If you have, don’t forget to root your device again after.
