Samsung is now making 1TB UFS chips for mobile devices

Samsung is the largest flash storage manufacturer in the smartphone industry. They supply Universal Flash Storage units for so many OEMs. The company just announced that they started mass producing of 1TB UFS 2.1 chips. Samsung has only gone as far as 512GB on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 model last year. It is also rumored that the Samsung Galaxy S10+ will be announced with 1TB internal storage, which automatically means that it will use UFS 2.1 instead of expected UFS 3.0.

Executive Vice President of Memory Sales and Marketing at Samsung Electronics, Cheol Choi, says that “The 1TB eUFS is expected to play a critical role in bringing more notebook-like user experience to the next generation of mobile devices.” Apparently, the 1TB unit requires exactly the same packaging size (11.5mm x 13.00mm) as the 512GB unit from the last year. It is made of 16 stacked layers of V-NAND flash memory. Samsung has also managed to somehow improve the read/write speeds over the previous units. You can see the chart below.

As you see from the table above, the newest chips offer quite generous improvements over the previous implementations. You’ll most likely see a 1TB UFS 2.1 flash storage unit on most of the smartphones released in 2019. Obviously, the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Samsung Galaxy S10+ will be the first devices to feature it.
